Should we make New Year’s Resolutions?

Yes, the New Year is upon us already.  With that comes the thoughts of what to do this year.

It is a long held tradition of making New Year’s resolutions, or in other words, what am I going to do different or better this year?
Some of the more common resolutions include the following:

Lose Weight
Manage Debt/Get out of debt
Save Money/ Make more money
Get a better job
Get Fit
Eat Right
Get a Better Education
Drink Less Alcohol
Quit Smoking Now
Reduce Stress Overall
Reduce Stress at Work
Take a Trip
Volunteer to Help Others
Plus many, many more…

We will cover some of these more in depth in upcoming articles but for now here are a few tips about making resolutions and goals.

1. Choose only 1 to 3 different goals to start with.  Choose the one’s that feel most important to you at this time.

2. Focus on the positive.
For example… Instead of focusing on getting rid of the junk food fat around my belly.  Focus on eating and being healthy.

3.  Divide the goal/resolution into smaller chunks or steps that can be done more easily.
Continuing the health example… Instead of completely changing my whole diet to foods that I’m not used to and don’t care for.  I’m going to eat more fruits and vegetables that I like already and try a new fruit or vegie once a week.

4.  Write it down.
Brian Tracy once said something to the effect of. ” A goal not written down is nothing more than a wish”  Writing it down (or typing it up can work too) helps cement it more in your conscious and makes it easier to remember.  Read it everyday even if you gotten discouraged about it.  Read it again and decide what to do about it next, or what to do different to make it work.

5.  Start Now!
Yes now.  Take a moment write down that resolution or goal that’s been on your mind for a while or the one that just popped in your head while reading this article.  Then come back to this article.  (It will still be here ;-) )

6.  Wisely share your goal with others.
Choose wisely who to share your resolution with.  Make sure that it is shared only with people that will support you in accomplishing it.

In short,  yes I feel we should make New Year’s resolutions but don’t overwhelm yourself with too many big changes at once.  But DO take steps now to achieve those changes, and be willing to make new resolutions anytime during the year as they come up for you.

Share your new resolutions and goals with us in the comments area along with how you are starting to get them.  Happy New Year!
